Grown in Durham Region

On our own 40 acres in Raglan, north Oshawa.

Hand-sorted

Each flake shaken over a screen and picked over by hand for weeds, sticks and twine.

Packed on our family farm

Weighed and boxed on the farm, then marked with the cut and the pack date.

The hay

Three boxes from our own fields

Every box is 10 lb (4.54 kg) of long-strand hay, never chopped. $32 each, or three for $90.

Why “Meadow Timothy”? Our grass fields grow timothy mixed with other meadow grasses, and adult rabbits do best on timothy plus other grass hays (Rabbit.org). Each box’s label colour matches its card here.

Which hay?

Which hay does my animal need?

Answer three quick questions. Grass hay should never run out, at any age.

Our suggestion

1st cut every day, 2nd cut for variety

How much will I need?

A medium rabbit gets through about 10 lb of hay a month, so plan on roughly a box per rabbit.

Rabbits
1
Guinea pigs
2
Chinchillas

Rule of thumb: about 10 lb a month for an average rabbit (Small Pet Select), about 4 lb for a guinea pig and about 3 lb for a chinchilla, our estimates from body size. Every animal differs, so round up.

Hi Raglan Ridge Hay Co., I'm with [organization] in [town]. We'd like a free sample box of [1st cut / 2nd cut / Alfalfa & Grass Blend]. Best number: [phone].

How a box is made

From our field to your hay rack

  1. Cut and baled dry

Our hay is cut at the right stage and baled dry in small squares.

  2. Best bales set aside

Only the greenest, cleanest bales go in the pet pile, stored under cover.

  3. Shaken and sorted

Each flake is shaken over a screen and picked over for weeds, sticks and twine.

  4. Weighed and labelled

Flakes stand on edge in the box to 4.6 kg, a little over the 4.54 kg on the sticker, which also shows the cut and the pack date.

  5. Delivered, shipped or picked up

Out on the next Durham run, ready for pickup at the farm, or shipped on a weekday with tracking.

Questions

Good to know

Do you ship?

Yes, within Ontario and Quebec: $10 a box to Toronto and $15 a box everywhere else. Boxes are packed on our farm and shipped on weekdays from Oshawa with tracking, and most arrive 2–3 business days after they ship. Durham addresses get our own delivery instead. We ship hay only; bedding comes by Durham delivery or farm pickup.

We don’t ship outside Ontario and Quebec. Hay is bulky, and shipping a box that far costs nearly as much as the hay inside.

Can I pick up at the farm?

Yes, by arrangement. Order ahead and pay by e-Transfer, and we’ll text you to set a pickup time at our farm in Raglan and send the address. Pickup is always free.

How do I pay?

For now, shipped orders and farm pickups are paid by e-Transfer ahead of time. Durham deliveries can pay on the day by e-Transfer or cash. Send e-Transfers to orders@raglanridgehayco.ca (it will show as A.P. Maintenance & Backhoe Inc.) with your order number in the message. Card payments at checkout are coming.

Prices are in Canadian dollars. Where tax applies, it’s added in your order summary.

Do you sell bedding?

Yes: paper shavings for cages and litter boxes. A 40 L bag, bagged on our farm, is $6, and a whole 2.8 cu ft pressed bale is $15.

Bedding comes with a hay order on our Durham runs, or you can pick it up at the farm. We don’t ship it, and it doesn’t count toward free delivery on 2 or more boxes.

What’s the difference between 1st and 2nd cut?

First cut is the spring growth: taller, stemmier and higher in fibre, with seed heads. Second cut regrows over the summer and comes off softer, leafier and greener.

Many owners feed 1st cut every day and mix in 2nd cut for variety or for picky eaters.

Can my adult rabbit, guinea pig or chinchilla eat the Alfalfa & Grass Blend?

Not as their everyday hay. Rabbit.org recommends alfalfa only for babies, nursing mothers and elderly or injured rabbits, and Guinea Lynx calls it a treat for the average adult guinea pig. Chinchillas do best on grass hay too. Ask your vet if you’re unsure.

How much hay should my rabbit eat?

As much as they want: hay should make up about 85% of an adult rabbit’s diet (Rabbit.org). A medium rabbit gets through roughly 10 lb a month, so a box a month per rabbit is a good starting point.

Why a plain box?

Plain kraft boxes keep the price down and recycle easily. One colour-coded sticker tells you which hay is inside, which cut it is and the day we packed it: green for 1st cut, olive for 2nd cut, plum for the alfalfa blend. Bedding bags carry a slate-blue sticker.

How should I store it?

Keep the box closed in a cool, dry spot, off concrete and out of the sun. Don’t seal hay in plastic; it needs to breathe.

What if my pet won’t eat it?

Tell us. If your animals won’t touch your first box, we’ll swap it for another cut or refund it.

A picky eater often takes to new hay if you mix it with the old for a week.

Is there dust?

Every flake is shaken over a screen and hand-sorted before it’s boxed. Hay comes straight from the field, so a little dust is normal; if a box isn’t right, let us know and we’ll make it right.

What do you do with my details?

We use your name, number and address only to fill and deliver your order and to text you about it. We don’t sell or share them, and we’ll delete them if you ask.
